The most well-known method of scattering ashes is through casting, where ashes are dispersed by hand onto the ground. Scattering urns, or scattering tubes, can also be used to cast ashes by scattering the cremated remains from the urn rather than directly handling them. Alternatives to casting include raking ashes into grass or soil, trenching ashes by burying them directly into the soil, scattering ashes in the sky while airborne, scattering ashes over a surface of water, or placing a biodegradable urn into a body of water.
