Typically, a funeral home or crematorium wants you to collect your loved one's remains as soon as they are available. They may allow you to arrange for shipping for the payment of shipping costs, for people whose loved ones did not live within easy driving distance. If you do not pick up the ashes, they may hold them for you for up to three months or longer, depending on state laws and company guidelines. If the funeral home or crematorium disposes of uncollected remains past this time, they may bury them or scatter them in an appropriate, respectful location.
