At its most basic, cremation services involve your loved one's body being reduced to bones and then further processed into fine particles resembling gravel or sand. This is called direct cremation, and is the most affordable form of cremation. There are additional, optional services you may wish to purchase with your cremation provider. These optional services may include transportation of the body to a funeral home, embalming and preparation of the body for a viewing, usage of the funeral home's facilities and staff for a funeral or memorial service, procession from the funeral home to the crematorium, and witnessing of the cremation. Besides these optional services, you will need to consider the cost of the casket or combustible container used for cremation and the cost of an urn for your loved one's ashes. If you are interring your loved one's ashes afterwards, you will also need to factor in the costs of purchasing an urn niche at a columbarium, or a burial plot and headstone at a cemetery.
