If your loved one's urn cannot pass through the airport scanner, the Transportation Security Administration will not open it themselves to manually check the ashes, even if you give consent and ask them to open the urn. Some security officials may allow you to open the urn by yourself if the ashes inside are contained in a bag that can be screened separately from the empty urn, but this is not a guarantee. There is a high chance you will fail the security check if you have an urn that cannot be screened, so plan to avoid this worst-case scenario by choosing an urn that can pass through a security scanner, such as a wood urn or a biodegradable (cardboard & paper) urn.
