Cremation is becoming increasingly more common in the United States, with about 60% of deaths in 2023 being cremated rather than buried. Worldwide the popularity of cremation varies, but in countries with large Buddhist or Hindu populations, anywhere from 80%-99% of deaths are cremated. In Japan, where funerals follow Buddhist traditions and land is limited, the cremation rate reached 99.97% in 2019.
