A genie, also known as as a jinni or djinni, is a mythological being in Arab culture that predates Islam. Genies are mentioned in the Qur'an, and they were introduced into Western literature when the Arabic story One Thousand and One Nights was translated into French in 1704. Included in this French translation was the folktale Aladdin, which features two wish-granting genies: one housed inside a lamp and the other inside a ring.
